The AMC Marlin
The first mid-size car: The Marlin claims to
be the first mid-sized fastback car made in the
United States during the sixties.
Origins of the Marlin: One proposal was for a
sporty youth-oriented car. A 4-seat fastback ,
the Rambler Tarpon was built and was shown
as a concept car at various auto shows before
the production version Ford Mustang was
unveiled to the public.
The 1965 Launch: The new addition to AMC’s so-called “Sensible Spectaculars” model line
The Press Reaction: It was featured on the covers of numerous automobile enthusiast
magazines and there were numerous road-test articles
Designer Reaction: Bob Nixon (now Jeep’s design chief at Chrysler) dismissed the project as
an "ugly embarrassment"

- The 1966 " Marlin II "
Racing Marlins: On its first time out the Hemi-powered car ran a 10.31-second quarter mile at
138 mph

Who Knew? : Mitt Romney's wife claims her fisrt date with Mitt was in "some
goofy-looking car" . That car turned out to be a new AMC Marlin. Mitt's Father, George W.
Romney was head of AMC at the time.. Mitt describes being embarrassed by the fact that
in high school he drove a car that he says was "kinda awful."
